Are The Active Towel® also Turkish towels, or Peshtemals?
Yes, our Active Towels® are authentic Turkish bath towels called Peshtemal (pesh-te-mahl). They are flat-woven, with hand-tied fringe, and made of Turkish cotton or cotton/bamboo blend. Peshtemals, also known as Foutas, have been an important part of the traditional Turkish bath, hammam, for 600 years, and are also found in Morocco, Tunisia and other Mediterranean bath traditions. A long standing Turkish tradition is when a couple decides to marry, they gift each other a bath set and the Peshtemal is the most important piece of the set.
How is it different from a typical terrycloth towel?
Turkish towels are lightweight, thin and extremely absorbent. They are large in size (typically 68 x 36 inches), yet quite compact and take up a quarter of the space as a terry cloth towel. Our light weight Active Towels are perfect for people with Arthritis and for older people who prefer not to use a heavy terrycloth towel.
Why Turkish Cotton?
Our Active Towels® are loomed from 100% Turkish cotton and/or bamboo by family-run textile makers in Turkey. Many are hand loomed. Turkish cotton is premium cotton that has extra long fiber and is grown in the small but productive Aegean region. Using longer fiber cotton in spinning yarn means fewer joins, which results in stronger and smoother cotton threads. Turkish Cotton becomes even softer, fluffier and more absorbent with successive washings.
Bamboo is an eco-friendly fiber. It is Antibacterial, Hypoallergenic and one of the softest fabrics available. Bamboo is an easily renewable resource because it grows quickly. It requires 1/3 the amount of water to grow that cotton uses and has no natural pests so it is grown with little to no use of pesticides or herbicides.
Are they earth-friendly? Yes! Our Active Towels® are so light weight that they are more energy-efficient than a typical terrycloth towel. They dry more quickly after use, so they don’t take on a musty smell and thus don’t need laundering as often and take far less time in the dryer.
How do I care for my Active Towel®?
The tassels are hand tied so to keep the towel looking its best, take the time to tighten each knot on the towel before washing.
Wash your towel before using it for the first time and it will get softer and more absorbent. Gentle laundering is best – machine wash in warm or cold with like colors. Tumble dry on low or, preferably, line dry. Please do not use bleach, harsh detergents, dryer sheets or high heat.
Never ever use fabric softener or bleach because:
- Active Towels won’t need any cover up for the musty smell. They are natural cotton or cotton/bamboo.
- The chemicals in the softeners will reduce the absorbency of your towels.
- In each use of bleach, you will lose the natural fibers which will decrease the strength and durability of your towels.
How should I treat a stain on my Active Towel?
We recommend against using harsh chemicals, and be careful to avoid bleach. A paste made with baking soda and vinegar also works wonders and is an all natural way to remove stains. Bleach weakens fibers making them less absorbent and more fragile.
The tassels on my Active Towel® have come undone. What should I do?
For best results, we recommend tightening the knots on the fringe prior to washing. Then, if they still come undone, here is what to do:
- Divide the loose threads into two roughly equal sections.
- Twist the two sections separately in a clockwise direction until each piece is twisted to the ends.
- Twist the two sections together in the opposite (counter-clockwise) direction until the two sections are twisted completely.
- Tie a knot at the end, and you’re finished!
A loop has gotten pulled on my Active Towel®. What should I do?
As all our towels are woven, a pulled loop will not unravel the towel. If you catch the towel and pull a loop, cut off the pulled loop with a pair of scissors. Don’t be nervous – you can’t make a hole in a hand woven piece.
